Press Release - November 2015
Local Rotary Clubs and City of San Ramon announce Unique Partnership to improve the Iron Horse Trail
Six Rotary Clubs in the East Bay and the City of San Ramon is proud to announce a unique collaboration with six Rotary Clubs in the East Bay to make improvements to the Iron Horse Trail. As part of a long planned City project to upgrade the Iron Horse trail with nine rest areas (rest “nodes”), the local Rotary Clubs (including San Ramon, San Ramon Valley, Dougherty Valley San Ramon, Alamo, Danville and Danville/Sycamore) have donated $28,000 to purchase trees, plants, and benches to beautify selected rest nodes along the trail. The City is managing the project which includes additional elements such as flatwork, irrigation, shade structures and signage.
On Saturday, November 7, 2015, more than 100 Rotarians, high school Interact students (a related group of young adults associated with San Ramon Rotary Club), scouts and city workers began the planting project. This inter-generational project was conceived through a consortium of Rotary Clubs whose collective purpose is to improve the community through local and international service projects.
Gary Sloan, President of the San Ramon Rotary Club expressed the shared enthusiasm of Rotary participants: “This project is designed to continue our efforts to promote a healthy community through environmentally sound improvements along the Iron Horse Trail leading to increased usage, and advancing the idea of a forward thinking community which benefits its citizens.”
In addition to the planting project kicked off last Saturday, the Rotary Clubs plan to engage 4th graders in an essay contest to learn about the importance of the Iron Horse Trail. Cash prizes will be awarded to the three top essays and presented at an event celebrating the completion of the Iron Horse Trail Landscape and Beautification project. Sloan notes that studies indicate that while the Iron Horse Trail is currently utilized by a wide demographic of citizens, it remains an underutilized resource. “This project will expand trail usage by creating a more attractive walking, running, and bicycle riding experience by establishing rest area enhancements along the route,” added Mr. Sloan.
Robin Bartlett, the project manager with the City of San Ramon Engineering Services Department shared the City’s views on involving residents in local improvement projects. “We are extremely gratified by the participation and enthusiasm the Rotary Clubs have shown. The City of San Ramon identified the need to improve accessibility to the Iron Horse Trail, and welcomes this partnership which is designed to expand community awareness of this important resource.”
The six Rotary Clubs providing support to the Iron Horse Trail are service organizations composed of community leaders who promote positive lasting change in the local and international community. Rotary Clubs support community efforts through direct service projects, fund raising, scholarships, community and international grants and insuring support of our local schools and teachers. The motto of Rotary is “Service Above Self”. There are over 34,000 Rotary clubs around the world with over 1.2 million members.
City of San Ramon is a community of over seventy-four thousand residents. Five schools within the City are located adjacent to, or near, the Iron Horse Trail. In addition, the Cities central business district with over twenty thousand employees straddles the trail. The City of San Ramon is committed to providing safe routes to school, alternative transportation to work, and recreational trails wherever possible.
